Fantasy Football Auction Value FAQ

How are fantasy football auction values calculated?

RubeSheets starts with projected statistics for each player and applies your league’s scoring system to estimate fantasy points. Those point totals are then adjusted based on factors such as starting lineup requirements, positional value, roster construction and other proprietary RubeSheets adjustments.

Finally, the adjusted player values are converted into auction prices based on the total amount of auction dollars available in the league. This allows RubeSheets to produce auction values that reflect the economics of your specific draft rather than relying on a generic dollar-value list.

 

How do custom scoring settings affect auction values?

Scoring settings can materially change the relative value of players and positions. RubeSheets recalculates expected fantasy points using the scoring rules entered for your league, then uses those results as part of the auction-value calculation.

Because the values are recalculated from the league settings, changes to passing, rushing, receiving, first downs, milestones and other scoring categories can shift both individual player values and the amount of auction budget allocated to each position.

 

How do Superflex leagues change auction values?

Superflex and other formats that allow additional quarterbacks increase the number of quarterbacks that can be started each week. That changes positional scarcity and can significantly increase quarterback auction values relative to a traditional one-quarterback league.

RubeSheets accounts for league starting requirements when adjusting player values, so the auction prices can respond to changes in roster format rather than simply applying the same rankings to every league.

 

How do keepers affect fantasy football auction prices?

Keepers remove both players and auction dollars from the available draft pool. That can change the value of every remaining player.

RubeSheets allows you to identify players who have already been kept and enter the total amount charged for those keepers. The calculator then adjusts the remaining auction values based on the players and dollars still available in the draft.

 

Can RubeSheets update auction values during a live draft?

Yes. The keeper functionality can also be used to update values as an auction draft progresses.

After a player is drafted, mark that player as kept, add the player’s final auction price to the total charge for kept players, and recalculate. RubeSheets will then redistribute the remaining auction dollars across the remaining player pool.

That gives you updated values based on what has actually happened in your draft rather than continuing to rely on pre-draft prices.

 

How are Best Ball auction values different?

In Best Ball, the lineup decision is effectively removed because the highest-scoring players on your roster are automatically used each week. In that sense, every player on the roster has the opportunity to “start” if his score is high enough.

That can materially change the value relationship between positions. In a traditional league, bench players are discounted partly because managers must correctly decide when to start them. In Best Ball, that decision risk disappears, so depth, volatility and positional composition can have different values.

RubeSheets adjusts its auction calculations for Best Ball formats to reflect those different roster dynamics.

 

How do Guillotine or death leagues affect auction values?

Guillotine and other elimination-style leagues change the value of roster strength because the field gets smaller throughout the season. Surviving each cut becomes more important than simply maximizing long-term average value.

That can create a premium for elite players who provide value for the whole season.

RubeSheets adjusts player values for Guillotine-style formats to reflect the increased importance of top-end talent as the league progressively contracts.

 

How does RubeSheets handle milestone scoring?

Some fantasy leagues award bonus points when a player reaches a statistical milestone, such as a certain number of passing, rushing or receiving yards.

RubeSheets does not treat those milestone bonuses as if every player will either definitely earn them or definitely miss them. Instead, it estimates the likelihood of a player reaching the milestone based on that player’s other projected statistics.

That expected milestone value is then incorporated into the player’s projected fantasy points and ultimately into the auction-value calculation.
